We are in a series called “Grow Your Email List”

And todays episode we will be covering “How To Pitch Yourself To Media Outlets To Increase Visibility During COVID-19”

I know we all may be tired of hearing about coronavirus but we cant ignore the impact its had. People are losing their jobs, losing clients and just in distress. But I’m here to tell you their is opportunity for entrepreneurs during this time. And I’m not talking about a sleazy opportunity. I’m talking about an opportunity to use your knowledge to help people.

You might be concerned that your clients and contracts are going to fall through because no one can afford you now during CODID-19? But this is not true. There are tons of people still spending money and would be happy to spend money with you – they just don’t know you exist. So the best thing you can do now is pivot your business outreach strategy to reach a larger and more targeted audience to increase your visibility. The media outlets right now are on the hunt for relevant helpful stories – now is your time to get noticed and be a positive light in the midst of darkness!

So let’s talk about how you can pitch yourself.

First off

1.MAKE YOUR MEDIA OUTLET LIST

Make a list of the media outlets that you are interested in pitching to.

Be sure you check out their content to ensure it aligns with what you do.

As you can image publications have multiple sections so find the section most relevant to you.

For example Huffington Post has a health section, finance section and they even have a business section – you would most likely look into pitching for the business section and even a sub section under that such as entrepreneurship.

So make your list.

First start with media outlets you already consume. What publications, blogs, websites, podcast do you currently read or listen to. Then you can find related outlets by typing the known outlets into google and seeing the related searches or my favorite is putting it in Instagram and looking at the other suggested accounts that come up.

For example goto Instagram. Find Huffington Post click the drop down button and you wills see suggested accounts that are related.

This way you can find smaller media outlets that still have a large audience but you wont have to compete with all the other people who may be hitting up the big dogs like Huffington Post. Not to say you shouldn’t have those big ones on your list but you want to make sure you have a variety of known and lesser known publications.

secondly

2.COME UP WITH A PITCH ANGLE

Now that you have looked at the publications you should know the type of content they publish. Obviously you do not want to copy anything but what you do want to do is have your own unique angle so they have new and fresh content to post.

Think about what you can offer to the world right now that is RELEVANT and will help solve a pain point. Relevant being the key word. Right now publications are looking for relevant coronavirus content to help people.

What information can you provide that will help solve a problem during this time. For example say you are a business coach like me. I may write an article on how you can pitch to media outlets to increase visibility during COVID-19.

So based on your expertise figure out how can YOU help and then create a pitch angle around that.

Once you know what you can potentially write about. And just to be clear you don’t need to write the article yet. We are just coming up with the idea now. But once you have the idea angle move on to step 3.

3.REACH OUT TO THE MEDIA OUTLETS

Find the specific editor. You can find their info on the publication website or linkedIn.

Start to follow and comment on publication articles and even follow the editor on social media. Start to like and comment on their posts for about 3 days. Now that you are on their RADAR its safe to reach out.

Do not go straight into pitching if you have not engaged with them first. Super important.

So 3 days later you reach out to them directly via email. The only exception is if the publication has an online submission process reach out that way. You will know because it will be listed explicitly on the site.

Here is an outline of what you should include in your outreach. I call it the SAVE

Outreach Method. Using this method with SAVE you from making a fool of yourself while pitching. Because I’ve seen it done the wrong way so many times and trust me you don’t want to be that person. So SAVE is an acronym.

S – is for specific

A – is for address

V – is for value

E – is for express

This method can work for pitching blogs features, podcast features, magazine features and website feature basically any type of feature.

Now lets break each down.

S –  you need to provide specifics around your engagement with their work and how it’s impacted you.

Let’s say you were reaching out to me to be featured on this Entrepreneur Secrets show. You would talk about how one of my episodes has helped you in some way.

So thats S you are being specific about how their work has impacted you.

A – address the reason you are reaching out, who you are, what you do and why its relevant for their readers. This is where you would tie in your angle you created in step 2. Include how it will help people during COVID -19 outbreak to ensure it’s relevant. If you are watching this after COVID 19 is over (which I hope is soon) use whatever is relevant during the time and make a connection.

So again with A you briefly mention who you are, what you do and why this is relevant for their readers.

Value – explain how you can add value to their audience. Be sure to list 3 proposed topics with a brief summary of each.

I believe I can add value to your audience on a few different topics. I’ve included those topics I think would really resonate with your readers here:

1. Proposed title or topic – Summary of content

2. Proposed title or topic – Summary of content

3. Proposed title or topic – Summary of content

So the 3 proposed topics can be different approaches to your angle created in step 2. So here you are NOT sending them full articles now. You are simply sharing topics. Once they select a topic then you will write the post. However, you need to be proactive and make sure you have all 3 articles written so when they say yes you can send immediately.

Moving on to E.

E – express your appreciation and elicit an action.

Express your gratitude for considering your request and let them know you can send over the full article for any topic that resonates with them. And sign with your name and contact info

TO RECAP:

Now is the time to increase visibility for your business because the demand is high for helpful knowledge. You can pitch to media outlets by first

1.MAKE YOUR MEDIA OUTLET LIST

2.COME UP WITH A PITCH ANGLE

3.REACH OUT TO THE MEDIA OUTLETS with the SAVE outreach method

It’s that simple. So do me a favor and try to think of what positive can come from this virus. You have opportunity to help people with your knowledge. And the beauty is once you get noticed on these outlets people will, join your email list and hopefully become clients. you will also increase your authority by being able to ad those “as seen on” logos to your site. It’s a win win for everyone.

In the next episode will continue the series “Grow Your Email List” so be sure to tune in!

That brings us to the end of episode #002. “How To Pitch Yourself To Media Outlets To Increase Visibility During COVID-19 “
